Well, it's nearly 10pm and I haven't touched Tumblr this evening. Time to go rectify that.

Card Swap

Day 244 The new card for my cable box finally arrived today, after many days of being greeted with a message of "Your new card is on its way" every time I switched my cable box on. This is the old card which I'm about to shred:

Card Swap

We originally got cable installed in 1997, it was a company called ComTel back then, one of lots of local cable TV companies in the country at the time. Eventually the bigger ones bought out the smaller ones, got bought out themselves, and we ended up with three companies - Sky, TeleWest, and ntl (who had bought ComTel). TeleWest merged into ntl and were then bought by Virgin Media, which is how we ended up with Virgin here. Apparently this new card will mean access to exciting new TV or something. I'd be happy with less episodes of Only Fools And Horses and Last Of The Summer Wine: The Crap Years.

Second attempt at another Men Behaving Badly DVD. First time I was almost at the end of an ep when one of Dad's toys cut the power off - twice. But it looks like he's shutting up the workshop for the day so it's safe to try again, especially considering the Dad's Army ep I was waiting for to record was introduced as "And now in a change to the advertised episode, here's one you've already got on DVD".

I'd mind less if these MBB eps were from earlier series, this is series 6 with the wedding story arc. It's still funny but not at its best, series 2-4 were the programme's peak. But power cuts aside, I should be able to get MBB finished this weekend.

Instead I sat downstairs with Mum and saw my first full contemporary episode of Coronation Street for 20 years or so. Cut for spoilers ) So, now I'm sorted for another 20 years, or until December and they have their 50th anniversary stuff on TV.

Hand Therapy

Day 115 I use lots of handcream. Thankfully this handcream is very good, and is the own brand of a cheap chain of chemists, plus I get a student discount.

I hate Sundays. There's nothing open, unless it's open for kiddies, and then it shuts at four. And I hate that House is scheduled on a Sunday night, so you can't plan to watch a big film or anything cos you have to stop at ten. But, the two TV channels which mysteriously disappeared on Friday night (UKGold +1 and Dave) are back. Not sure why those ones went, UKGold and Dave ja vu were fine.

ZOMG you have to watch this programme! It's half-way through now, but you must catch it on iPlayer or a repeat showing or whatever you normally do. Bill Bailey's Remarkable Guide To The Orchestra. It's Bill Bailey and the BBC Concert Orchestra, conducted by Anne Dudley (who composed the Jeeves & Wooster theme music, among other things). It's got lots of Bill Bailey's standard stuff in (Cockney influences in classical music, Theremin etc) but it's a fun way to see an orchestra.

It's so awesome cos when I was a kid, music lessons were full of how classical music is Stuff You Should Know And Appreciate and it was completely humourless. And popular music was the Devil's work. The Head of Music at my school wanted me to learn the Bassoon, apparently because there was one left in the central place where the city's school instruments were kept. The school couldn't have it delivered unless I said yes I would learn it. I didn't know what a bassoon was, but because I couldn't see one unless I said I wanted to learn it, I didn't get to see one in real life. And I didn't want to agree to learn the bassoon without seeing one, and apparently there were no pictures of bassoons anywhere at school. But now, thanks to this programme, I've seen one :)

Did anyone else here watch How We Used To Live as part of history lessons at primary school? I saw it in my final year at Junior school (age 10-11), and I loved it. I didn't realise at the time, but there were several series - 'my' series was the 1936-1953 era, covering the reign of King George VI, plus the year before and after - the first episode featured King Edward VIII's abdication and the final episode focused on Queen Elizabeth II's coronation.

I hadn't given it a thought for ages, but tootling through Wikipedia I came across the entry for one of the actresses - the mother of the family which my series was centered around.

Can anyone please explain why UKTV G2 is now known as Dave?
