DVDs In A Box

Day 365 This was the best thing I could think of for my final picture, but I think it's rather appropriate:

Home DVDs

I bought my Combi in January, and have been converting items I have on VHS onto DVD ever since. This box includes those I've converted so far (except the Frasier episodes which are in a different box), and the DVD recordings I've made - up to last night, which was Toast, the adaptation of Nigel Slater's autobiography.

I'm not planning on extending this to a second year, nor am I planning to move to another thing-a-day. So it will be back to posting whenever I've got something to witter on about rather than pictures. Happy New Year!

Christmas Coffee

Day 364 One bonus about not being at work is that there's proper coffee available every day, should I want it. And the current coffee is appropriately Christmassy:

Christmas Blend Coffee

It's nice, dense and wintry. Am needing a decent coffee kick right now so it keeps me awake now and will fade during the day, given that I slept roughly 6am-12 noon today. Six hours sleep isn't a problem, but if I can't fall asleep until an hour before I'm due to get up next week, that definitely will be.

Venturing Out

Day 363 Have been to Sainsburys - it's very foggy out, this was the view from the car park:

Foggy Scene

No sleep until well past 4am again, my nose is still fdksjfkljflkasjf but not as much as it was, but am still coughing at night, which is what keeps me awake for so long. Have bought a few more items for sushi-making, which will happen tomorrow (I have shop-bought sushi for today), plus a few dips but DUH! I forgot breadsticks, will have to make do with plain tortilla chips :(

Day 362 This is the Christmas Amaryllis I bought for Mum & Dad last week - you can sit & watch it grow:

Christmas Amaryllis

I had intended today's pic to be another pic of home-made sushi, but on venturing into the kitchen I found all the saucepans in use. I've just found out - now that it's evening and it's too late to start on the sushi tonight - that we still have some of the old saucepans (even the ones with the dodgy handles) and if I'd just looked on top of the very high cupboard which I can't see without the stepladder then I'd have been able to make sushi today. Well, if I knew they still existed, I could've looked for them. Maybe I should take a complete inventory of everything in the house and learn it by heart.

The Thaw

Day 361 As you can see, we're definitely not in Northeastern USA because what little snow remains is now thawing steadily:

The Thaw

This is a view of the conservatory roof, which a few days ago was a soft sheet of white snow. Now, my Firefox add-on tells me it's 3 degrees, which is the warmest it's been for over a week. We're supposed to get some more snow tonight I think, but nowhere near the amount they first predicted, that's if it actually reaches us which is also up for debate.

My cold continues to be interesting, the decongestants are working excellently but still the coughing into the small hours. Slept 4.30am-11.30am straight through this morning, so I guess I can't complain too much.

Day 360 Following yesterday's present haul, I'm not short of DVDs to watch:

Something To Watch

Although for now, I'm quite happy enjoying the silence while spending hours at a time on Wikipedia reading about EastEnders characters from the 1980s or whatever. Also my sleep schedule is totally wrecked, because it's so cold at night my sore throat is irritated further and I'm up most of the night coughing, so sleep happens mostly between 5am and 11am, with odd hours before or after if I'm lucky. So long as I can shift this cold I should be fine about getting back on schedule, I'm not in work until 4th January, and I'm past the stage in my cold where I need an extra snooze in the afternoon.

We don't really have any leftovers apart from the turkey and half a jar of good quality cranberry sauce. Because we had Christmas dinner late in the afternoon we didn't have a buffet-type meal during the day, so we never bought the accompaniments usual for this (eg dips, breadsticks, cheese straws, etc) that are so yummy when eaten as leftovers. We do have the stilton of course, plus some strong cheddar, various relishes, and the box of biscuits for cheese, which I made a start on as part of breakfast. I was thinking it was a shame we didn't have the dips, but then they're so predictable, everywhere sells the same quartet, it's no longer a novelty and no-one ever wants much of the thousand island dip. But I still plan to make sushi at some point next week.

Christmas Day

Day 359 Christmas Day at our house - with Little Bean, so much fun. Although I think she was rather overwhelmed, all these new toys and all these faces watching her, although she enjoyed her presents and the Christmas lights.

We had Christmas lunch at 5pm, this is our Christmas table:

Christmas Dinner

Delish as always, and followed by peach trifle. No crackers before the meal because the baby was asleep. Thankfully my cold is improving, although I'm still on the paracetamol every four hours.

Everyone liked the presents I bought, especially the calendars. I received lots of DVDs, lots of sweets (we won't run out of chocolate here for a long time) and some Auntie things. But it was so lovely to spend Christmas Day with Bean <3

Day 358 Christmas Day preparations are underway:

Stuffing & Preparations Christmas Preparations

Dad has gone to Morrisons because apparently the nuts we have aren't up to the usual standard. He's also said he'll get some more Paracetamol - I am getting better slowly but still getting through the stuff at speed. Meanwhile I am keeping up with NORAD Tracks Santa (as I type he's heading for Shanghai) which I just love so much. afjelkjfjflajflkjfldjfklsj so wonderful, hi-tech meets Santa magic saljfal;fj;dsjf;lsjfl; OMG just wait until Bean is old enough to be introduced to NORAD Tracks Santa dljflajflkdjsflslkl

And last night The Good Life episode "When I'm 65" was on! It normally never gets shown, it was a one-off episode made for the Queen to attend the studio filming. It was shown with the Queen arriving beforehand and meeting the cast and credited crew (ie studio managers, makeup artist) after. The voiceover mentioned how some of the crew had been with the BBC for a while ("He came as a pageboy in 1931" and so on).

Footwear

Day 357 Dad is always asking me why I need so many pairs of shoes. This was him selecting footwear a little while ago:

Dad's Shoes

This is not all, he also has some safety shoes which he bought via work - they look like ordinary brown brogues but they have steel toe caps, and another pair of trainers that live in the extension. And why does he need two pairs of slippers?

They've gone to my sister's place to take round a bunch of Christmas cards - apparently all presents will be opened here on Christmas Day. I have stayed behind with my cold/flu/whatever germs, although am pleased to report I am no longer burning up and no longer look at the snow-covered lawn with a longing to roll around in the snow to cool down. Still a bit yuck and achy but hopefully will be much better for Christmas Day.

Snow Is Falling

Day 356 It's snowing again! And I'm finished work and finished food shopping so that's fine by me. Just as long as the roads are clear enough to get around on Christmas Day.

Snow Falling

I definitely have a cold, or something. My nose is nominal but the rest of me aches a bit, but the paracetamol is nice. And my Open University hoodie & T-shirt have arrived! Haven't opened the parcel yet so I hope they're as I ordered.

Day 355 This dangling decoration used to be in my room, but as I don't decorate my room for Christmas any more, it's in with the general household decorations. Here it is at the bottom of the stairs:

Christmas Decoration

It's a bit blurry here but it's difficult to get it to stay still. And I am posting early in the day because I'm working from home (currently taking lunch) as I woke up to a scratchy sore throat and a cough which I didn't want to risk enraging in the arctic weather. Have got lots done, realised the reason I was having problems with a database is because I wasn't looking at it right but it all makes sense now. Also had a panic this morning as my laptop (pretty sure it wasn't me) switched the wireless off and I went round testing the desktop PC downstairs and the web browser on my iPhone, then testing the laptop's connection setup and delving into the help file, which helpfully starts by telling you to make sure the connection is switched on. So I switched it on and it worked fine.

Day 354 One of our team brought in her homemade signature cake, Chocolate, orange & poppyseed:

Chocolate, Orange & Poppyseed Cake

It was utterly delicious. It's plain chocolate so it's not a sweet cake, but it is totally divine. The chocolate is just lightly soft, so it squidges slightly and melts in the mouth.

We were supposed to have Bean stay overnight, but her parents' plans have been postponed by the weather so they came to collect her. But I got to play with her in her jungle swing, she was laughing and smiling so much, such fun <3 <3

The snow means I may possibly be working from home tomorrow, which I'm fine about. I went to Sainsburys & for petrol before work today, and left work this afternoon not long after 3pm because the snow was really coming down - they were closing the office at 4pm but said if anyone wanted to go earlier that's fine. So, my shopping plans turned out to be a wise move.

Lovely Stilton

Sunday, December 19th, 2010 06:11 pm
tourmaline: (Default)
Day 353 I tend to be rather wary of starting Christmas food (ie snack food, seasonal variations of the usual stuff) too early, lest it all be gone by the big day. But we had to start on the Stilton because it's too big for the cheese dish, so we have some in the cheese dish and this is the rest:

Stilton

So the stuff in the cheese dish is less than half of what we bought. And it's highly delicious. I know Stilton is delicious anyway, but this is more sublime than the usual stuff, it doesn't have the standard sharp kick, more of a gentle buzz that increases in intensity when you eat more. Very highly recommended.

Our Christmas Tree

Day 352 This is our Christmas tree, complete with assortment of decorations:

Our Christmas Tree

Most of them now date from the 1990s, a few survive from older days - such as the green bell and the pink and yellow slot-together star - and out of sight are the pair of bells I made at playgroup out of a polystyrene eggbox with glitter. And yes, that's my graduation picture from Warwick behind the tree.
tourmaline: (Default)
Day 351 We had our Christmas lunch from work today. This was my Secret Santa gift:

Scret Santa Lush Goodies

So that's a Christmas Pud, Gingerbread House and Sugar Plum Fairy fizzy-splashy-bath things. They're currently on the windowsill (in their separate bags) making my room smell lovely.

Our meal was delish, the place was really lovely (except I was near the fire doors so I got a bit of a whistling draft, but it's preferable to being too hot) and the staff were very good. It was snowy enough to be picturesque over that side of town, but our main road outside our home is slushy and icy. I hope it'll be OK for me to venture out to work at least one of the two days I'm in next week, so that I can go to Sainsburys. We're due for some more snow over the weekend but it's likely we'll miss out on the worst of it.

Day 350 This is the Christmas tree at work, in our reception area:

Reception Christmas Tree

The blue lights flash, and cropped out of the picture is a rather sad-looking wound-metal star which makes the top of the tree droop over.

Christmas Earrings

Day 349 Have sorted out my Christmas earrings:

Christmas Earrings

These were bought as two sets of three, from Sainsburys, a few years ago. I usually wear the bells on Christmas Day, and I've worn the trees before at work. I've also worn the wreaths but I can't remember when, only that they lingered in my trinketbox into January. At the moment I'm favouring either the stockings or the candy canes to wear on Friday for our Christmas lunch.
tourmaline: (Default)
Day 348 If only other areas of life were as bright and fluffy and predictable as this.

Strawberry Shortcake Corner

This is a strawberry shortcake corner. Someone took the spirit of Madeliene Bassett and created a 21st-century dessert. The reason for this verbal sigh is that the weather is predicted to be on the crapola side on Friday (the West Midlands and Warwickshire are orange on the Met Office warnings map) and this is the day of our Christmas lunch. So, it's possible that bad weather may prevent us from getting there. And if we do arrive, bad weather may prevent us from leaving. I hope neither of these scenarios happen. Hopefully the problems we've had with the Secret Santa will be all the bad luck associated with this meal.
tourmaline: (Default)
Day 347 As one set of the Christmas cards I bought from Save The Children doesn't actually fit the envelopes they come with, I had to buy another pack of ten. I saw these in Sainsburys and had to have them:

Lego Christmas Cards

Aren't they awesome? Now I have to decide who to send Lego cards to and who to send the other cards to. This might be tricky.

Spotty Socks

Day 346 I put some new socks on :) I really like these, but I haven't worn them very often, they tend to get pushed to the back of the sock drawer.

Spotty Socks

Bean went home after lunch, my sister and her partner came to collect her and stayed for bacon sandwiches. Bean was very good, despite getting rather worked up into a tantrum last night, she went to sleep straight away when she was put to bed and was wide-eyed and smiling and singing this morning.
