Day 311 We have been stocking up on Christmas purchases recently since the shops started selling earlybird offers on Christmas food & presents. Including mince pies - here is my first mince pie of the season, accompanying this afternoon's cup of coffee:

First Mince Pie Of The Season

From Mr Kipling, I think - our usual brand. Exceedingly Good :D

Pringle Skittles

Day 308 Well not quite, but they're naturally arranged that way:

Pringles

We've got so many because Tesco have an offer on - buy 1, get 2 free - so we thought we'd stock up for Christmas, or whenever we can eat our way through these.

And in case you've not seen, Stephen Fry is back tweeting ♥ he has a post on his website about recent happenings. I did think that if he's coming back, then it would be within a few days.

Day 304 So no Halloween festivities, no special food, but I found an orange ribbon:

Vaguely Halloweeny

I thought the chilli flakes would be an appropriate foody symbol for this time of year in the absence of anything pumpkin-like. They're warming or sharp, depending on how you partake of them.

Day 299 Had to stop for petrol on the way home from work, so I went to Sainsburys. Now, the little shop at the petrol station sells stuff you can't get in the main store for some unknown reason. This includes Rowntrees Randoms:

Rowntrees Randoms

They're jelly-like sweets in random shapes. And very nice too, I've been wanting to try some ever since I first saw the advert:

:)

Kettle Chips

Day 295 Yes I know, another picture of food. These you may recognise as Kettle Chips.

Kettle Chips

Now that Sainsburys is rolling out the Christmas stock, it's starting to creep into my regular shopping. These are Stilton & Port flavour, a seasonal limited edition, and utterly delicious.

Today's pic was going to be of my hoodie but I couldn't get the white parts looking sparkly white, instead they look like they're thirsting for some Persil so that's just resting in my Flickr account for now. Then I was going to photograph the little cardigans Mum's bought for Bean but they're drying on the radiator so I'd only get the bottom half of them in. So instead you have my default setting of food pics.

Very Chocolatey Cake

Day 293 Well, we did get cut in half in the Spending Review :( We were fortified by this, made by one of the managers, partly for a colleague's birthday and partly for medicinal support for a mad yet gloomy day workwise.

Very Chocolatey Cake

It's very rich-tasting, not very sweet, just creamy cocoa tastes. She started to tell us all of what is in the cake, ie ton of butter, ton of sugar, 132165464461313 calories. There's still some left, in addition to the items I brought in yesterday, and someone else has added chocolate digestives to the collection. Don't think we're going to starve just yet.

Day 292 I bought two lots of baked goodies yesterday for work, a pack of rocky road bites (which I originally thought were just rice krispie bites, so yay) and a pack of Halloween gingerbread shapes - an assortment of these four shapes:

Halloween Gingerbread

Am focusing on the gingerbread rather than the rocky road bites, because I'm leaving the rocky road bites for those who medicinally need them. Comprehensive Spending Review is tomorrow, and it appears we're about to be royally shat on, hosed down with cold water, and then cut into little pieces and buried in a ditch. Not looking good.

Day 288 Halloween starts earlier every year! We have been eating these at work this week:

Halloween Chocolate

They were bought by T, who decided he couldn't bear the non-rattle of an empty biscuit tin any longer. They are nice, but I find it odd that we go out and buy them for the novelty value of a slightly different flavour filling and spooky picture on the wrapping. It's not as if we eat Cadburys Mini Rolls all year round.

Having said that, I'm looking forward to treating myself (and possibly others, if there's logistical reasons to share) to Halloween cookies. Yum.

Day 284 I made sushi again this evening:

More Homemade Sushi

The verdict: again not bad at all, need to ensure rolls are wrapped tightly enough. Use a serrated knife to slice rolls. Also found that Philadelphia is a nice idea but can be tricky, and sundried tomato is totally awesome in sushi. This makes 18 pieces for dinner (not counting all the bits I've picked at) and 20 pieces for lunch tomorrow (that sounds a lot but most of them are small).

Am now watching Swing Kids, cos I wanted (a) Robert Sean Leonard; (b) awesome cool music; and (c) emo-RSL.

Audrey Hepburn Socks

Day 282 Decided to wear my Audrey Hepburn socks today:

Audrey Hepburn Socks

I saw them in Boots years ago in Birmingham, I've never seen them anywhere else, I thought they were cool (if a little unusual, being immortalised in socks isn't one of the usual fandomages) so I don't wear them too often in order to preserve them.

We're having Chinese takeaway tonight \o/ now I have to decide what I want. I'm really in the mood for chips, their chips are really nice. Have to decide what to have with them. My usual order is vegetable curry with plain rice, which is delicious, but I don't want to keep having the same thing from them for years on end.

Day 281 A workfriend was on holiday in Switzerland last week, and bought us back souvenirs in the form of delicious Swiss chocolate. Here's a sample - it's all the same inside, with a selection of Swiss scenes on the outside:

A Taste Of Switzerland

I love Swiss chocolate, I really like Milka, which you only really see here in big bars these days, no small bars or festive presentations or even Easter Eggs. I remember when it first came to the UK in the mid-1980s, OMG so delish, but I guess people preferred Cadburys or whatever so it didn't establish a big presence. Shame.

Tomatoes

Day 275 I know I post pics of food a lot. Here's something healthy that was grown on the estate (ie in the greenhouse at the bottom of the garden):

Tomatoes

The little coloured tomatoes are nice, but Dad says the bigger ones don't have much flavour. He's made tomato soup from a recipe my aunt sent to use some of them up, with some guidance from myself as a seasoned soup maker. Except I can't make any soup until Dad's eaten his, cos he's used my freezerware to store it. Anyway, whatever these tomatoes taste like, I love how they smell so fresh and summery.

Cheeselets

Day 274 The shops are starting to sell Christmas stuff - around the Halloween stuff, of course. This is mostly tinned and boxed food items such as tins of assorted biscuits and snacks, including these:

Cheeselets

They actually taste of proper strengh cheese. It may be created through a mixture of salt and additives but it's nice. And they're baked not fried. And that's assuming I can get my hands on some before Dad scoffs the lot.

Pizza Hut

Day 261 We're not long home from Pizza Hut. Yesterday was my cousin's older daughter's 18th birthday, this was a family meal like they usually have. Only not quite like they usually have, because this was nice.

Pizza Hut Balloons

There were only seven of us - self, Mum & Dad, cousin, two daughters, Birthday Girl's boyfriend. Cousins from Wales weren't there, uncle wasn't there, Birthday Girl's brother wasn't there (he was taking his grandmother to see a West End show as it was also her birthday in the week). The food was nice, the staff were very good - cheerful, made one mistake with the order in that they had a large pizza for Mum instead of a small one, but charged only for a small one - and the service was good and the place was clean.

Train Again

Day 259 I have been to Birmingham again. Train services provided by London Midland:

London Midland

Thankfully the walls aren't green too. I bought the usual stuff - Jellybeans, Hotel Chocolat, sushi, coffee - and a 101 Dalmations wrist rattle for Bean, who is 1 month old today! We're visiting tomorrow so I can give it to her then.
tourmaline: (Default)
Day 258 Mum & Dad just came home with fish & chips for lunch! Far too many chips, so they let me pinch some - this is a little side plate, please note:

Crisp Und Light Brown

They were delish even though they were starting to cool noticeably and weren't all crispy. And in case you were wondering where the partly-German title to this entry is from:

And if you knew exactly what I was on about and want to hear That Line again, it's here (better quality, YouTubed by one of the writers):

tourmaline: (Default)
Day 256 I just made some sushi! Here it is:

Home-Made Sushi

I know it's supposed to be presented in a beautiful way, but I thought moving it might cause some pieces to disintegrate. It tastes OK too, not bad for a first effort I thought. There were supposed to be four nigiri sushi pieces, but this was the only one that made it to a complete item. The Gunkanmaki have red & yellow tomato pieces in, they taste really nice but they're a bit fragile. The makizushi all have seafood sticks with veggies, including carrots and salad onions or chives. I think if I do make some sushi for work - we have awaydays once a year, lunch is on us and there's lots of showing off of culinary skills - I'd just stick to makizushi cos they're easiest to do.

Pick Up A Penguin

Day 254 I just had a Penguin biscuit to accompany my afternoon coffee. One like these:

Pick Up A Penguin

They're something of an institution biscuit-wise in the UK. In terms of composition, they're similar to the Australian institution, the Tim-Tam, except the cocoa content of the Penguin is lower. And there's no such thing as a Penguin Slam.

Ripe Apples

Day 248 As closeup as I can get on the juicy ripe apples on the tree in our neighbour's garden. They've given us a few apples and they're very nice, but obviously picked from the lower branches as evidenced here:

Ripe Apples

I hope they do get to pick the apples from the top of the tree, it's a shame when delicious fruit goes unpicked for logistic reasons.

Healthy Breakfast

Day 237 This was my healthy breakfast this morning - it's my usual working day breakfast:

Healthy Breakfast

The bread is Hovis Seed Sensation with sunflower seeds, which is the yummiest bread ever.

Am trying to do some more VHS to DVD conversions. Was sorting out my Monty Python episodes - but one tape of them rolls constantly. Problem is you can't solve it by tracking, that only affects how the tape is displayed on the screen. Therefore, I think this is one more box set for the Amazon Wishlist. I just hope M*A*S*H converts OK, Mum & Dad have most of the episodes also so if mine don't work there's a chance of a backup. Most of the programmes I like best are ones I've converted already or have purchased on DVD, but there's lots of stuff I'd rather not lose forever. So, now I am converting Two Pints Of Lager And A Packet Of Crisps (shut up, the first two series only).
