Compartmentalisation

It's only just-after-lunch on Day 3, but it's been three days of awesome significance and mixed emotions.
Thursday saw the final landing of the Space Shuttle. I was so glad that the crew's final day started with Shannon Lucid waking them up, she was part of the 1978 Astronaut Group, one of the first six women selected by NASA to become astronauts, in the first group recruited to serve on the space shuttle, and she's been with NASA continuously ever since, even though it's two decades since her last spaceflight she's continued to serve NASA in various roles. And although the landing was a night landing and so there was less to see, I think they made the right decision in bringing Atlantis home at that time, the decision was made without any sentimentality but with what was right for the mission and the safety of the vehicle and crew. And what a crew! I still have lots to catch up on post-landing, but it did feel like the four of them did the work of a full-size crew of six or seven.
Friday was my friend C's last day working with us, he's moving to another organisation in our city. I was surprised to hear he'd been with us for six years, I guess time flies when you're having fun. We went to the restaurant at the Ikon Gallery in Birmingham for tapas, which was really nice, there was a big group of us, including C's wife, a couple more partners, and one of our friends who left the organisation a couple of years ago. It was a really nice evening, I had to leave early so I'd get home (via train & a drive home) at a decent hour because I had an early start today. I can't imagine the place without C, he's brilliant at his work and he's good company, good fun, one of those people who you miss when they're on holiday.
So this morning was my Olympic Gamesmaker selection event, I was pleased with how well it seemed to go (I hope that's not an illusion). There's a little talk, some exhibition displays, a video with Sebastian Coe, Tanni Grey-Thompson and Eddie Izzard, and then 1-1 interviews. They had a little Official Merchandise stall set up on the way out, I've been thinking about buying a keyring so I thought this would be a good chance to actually get one and not be paying postage, so I bought a metal keyring in the shape of the 2012 Paralympics logo (the 2012 Paralympics' official colours are nicer than the 2012 Olympics colours IMO). And I've still got my Blue Group wristband on - this was to stop us getting mixed up with another group I think, I also saw jars of white and pink wristbands.
So back home, I have a week off work to come so YAY. And Bean is here today, she's so happy, when she smiles she looks like my sister and I did when we were small. And I also have jellybeans so more yay.
