Wierd Day

tourmaline: (bertie oh noes)
Today has been wierd.

Firstly, I'm still angry a lot of the time, although am managing to downgrade it to irritability enough to keep working. Started out with the long slow drive into work, stuck behind a lorry with a grabby thing in a cage on its back trundling along at 2mph. Managed to lose it at traffic lights, only to find myself behind a Fiat with an old couple in it - he was driving, while apparently trying to remove the octopus from his arse at the same time if his fidgeting was anything to go by.

There are no colours at work. Our desks have that crappy faux-wood laminate stuff on them, and while I have a footrest, the starfish-shaped foot of my swivel chair means I can't get it as close to me as I'd like. The walls are a pale lilac colour which is one pixel-shade away from grey, and my PC is about 7 years old, running Windows 2000 very slowly. We have this network thing set up, which is supposed to make things run smoother for people in the other offices or who work at home - which it may well do, but it's a pain in the arse for us in the main office.

One positive note today: a 70th birthday. One of the few people who've been there longer than me, he's a part-time worker who looks after the post, sorts out stationery and sometimes reception. The rest of his team had decorated his desk, we were really surprised he's 70 - I mean, I knew he's my parents' generation but I thought he'd be nearer my parents' age. And I know he's been in the army but he's never seemed to be much of an ex-forces guy - well at 70 he's old enough to have done National Service. Plus, I love the idea that he's still working at 70 - I mean he's not been obliged to retire like he would have done only a few years back.

Coming home: miracle oh miracle it wasn't raining, but my mind was so bamboozled by boredom I think I ran a red light at the pedestrian crossing. Nothing was on the road (I even checked under my front bumper when I got home, no remains of old ladies there) but it shows how unremarkable red traffic lights are. It's just background stuff really, at least green lights make you stop & notice them - it should be the other way round. I don't know if anything will come of this - there are cameras at the crossing, but I don't know if they're to watch the traffic or people approaching (ie for automatic lights-changing). I think if something did happen it would be a letter & pay online or similar, like my Dad had to when they went to Wales and he got caught speeding.

Also I'm getting seriously over-emotional at everything these days. Any fic with even a hint of ILU gets me bawling, even just thinking about them sometimes. It's getting to be disruptive.
