WhoooooHoooooo!!!!! Team GB's first Gold!!! Nicole Cooke in the Cycling Road Race.

The medals for Beijing 2008 are particularly beautiful, they have Chinese jade inlaid into them:

Hooray! :) I hoped she would be competing because she has won an enormous number of races in the past. I also have high hopes for Shanaze Reade, who has had a very successful career so far. Did you know she became the 2006 British National No. 1 BMX champion at the age of 17 in the 19 & over elite men category?

The British are also very strong in eventing and showjumping, aren't they? Generally the media seem to prefer to harp on about our failings in football, rugby and cricket (unless it's Clare Balding fawning over Zara Phillips, which I always find embarrassing!). But you only have to look at European Eventing Championship on Wikipedia to see all the British wins over the years.

Yep, and the equestrian teams, and the gymnasts are looking good, and... and... There was an article in the Guardian recently about how Team GB could be the 'dark horse' of this Games, we do well in so many of the sports that don't get the media coverage they deserve.

I'm glad Nicole Cooke did well, I remember her being interviewed before her race at Athens 2004, about how she was expected to bring home at least a bronze then, and she came in 5th. But now she has the gold :)
