I didn't read Charlie & the Chocolate Factory until it was republished as a tie-in with the Johnny Depp film. When you're above average in reading ability as a child (at least in the 1970s-80s) you missed out on a lot of children's literature, no matter how classic. I think the only children's classic I read as a child was Ian Serrailier's The Silver Sword, which was allowed because it was historical. And I was so envious of my young cousin who had her own copy of The Very Hungry Caterpillar :D
