The Big Hoot

I took a four-day weekend, starting Thursday, so I could go owl-spotting in Birmingham.

You can see the full set of my photos here. I have a work thing in Birmingham next week so hopefully I can get a few more photos, I didn't see the one that's in the Bullring because I only went in to get my JellyBellys from Selfridges.

I've rather failed to keep up with Project365 in practice, even though I'm still doing it in spirit. So, here are some pics of three of my advent calendar chocs that I scoffed close to Christmas:

Evidently a few air bubbles in the mistletoe one, but you couldn't taste them :)

I have another week off before going back to work, and I have a few things to do in the meantime which involve going into town. I hope it's not too mad.

I took some pictures on the business park today, as the sun was out. It was a bright, but cold, day. I'm really pleased with the pictures but some look a bit eerie-but-beautiful, which was not how the day was. Hope you like - note that there are lots of pics here.

Look Up To The Sky

Another from Project 365 (if I can skip a few days, I can post twice in one day). I looked out the window to see the sunset glow, and there was Venus, bright and high in the sky:

6Dec08 Venus

It was actually brighter and lighter for real than the photo shows. Then I thought "Hmm, wonder what time the ISS is due to pass?" and looking up at the moon, which is at first quarter and pretty high at the time, I saw the ISS orbiting past! Awesome. Then a few minutes after it had disppeared, Jupiter was visible close to Venus, but unfortunately it's too faint now to show up on camera.

The Last Rose

I've skipped a few days, I know. I had physics coursework to complete, plus I got into a bit of a fluster about it, as I only got 58% for my previous coursework on geosciences, which is one of my favourite areas of science. Have now started on chemistry, which looks interesting but there's lots to get your head around. Hope I can get my head around it, some of it looks like a different language.

But on to the pic. Just took this one, I was looking in the garden for something to photograph and we have one tiny rose still surviving.

If you click on the pic and look at the full size photo on Flickr, you can see all the different textural colours on the petals. I love roses.

Day.... whatever of Project365 - some notebooks & whatnot:

2Dec08 Notebooks

The stripy 2008 one is my day-to-day diary; the Winnie-The-Pooh reporter's notebook is what I use to scribble down stuff for the computer, Uni work, etc. The black-and-stripy spiral notebook has my standard equations, SI units etc for my course, so I don't need to go through the textbook to find stuff. The cherry plant notebook (with not-really-matching pen) is my autograph book - I had to buy something for when I met the astronauts. Looking at their autographs immediately brings back that wonderful day, meeting these people who not so long ago I'd seen up in space :)

Day 3 of Project365. I have made a start on wrapping Christmas presents. I'm currently waiting for the second half of an Amazon order, then apart from Captain Tea Features, all is done.

I'm still cross about House being so meh this week. I took a whole evening off from studying to watch this ep, and this is all I get. So now I am watching House Vs God for the House/Wilson love and the eyesex.

Day 2 of Project365. My bookshelves are rather full, as you can see:

This is Chammy The Space Duck, who entered my life yesterday. He was bought for me by my awesome friend Sharon, who saw him and immediately thought of me. Which is such a sweet thought and a lovely surprise to return to work to. Isn't his Advanced Crew Escape Suit so cool?

I named him Chammy after Greg Chamitoff, member of the STS-124 crew who is coming to the end of his six-month stay on the ISS and will return to Earth with the current mission, STS-126.

Autumn on Flickr

I created a Flickr account to hold the pics I took today of the autumn leaves. Here's a preview:

The full set of autumn pics can be found here. If you check my Flickr homepage you'll see I've also uploaded some pics of my 10th anniversary flowers from work and last month's astronaut photos. Hope you like!

This is the first time I've slowed down this week. It's been rather stressful in a cumulative way - I'm proofreading a book we're about to publish at work, and after a while you do go rather cross-eyed. I've also had coursework to complete, and car stuff to sort out. I finally sent my coursework off tonight, and also tonight I got my car taxed - such a relief to be able to do it online! Particularly so as I've lost my MOT certificate and will have to pay to get a reprint. I need to sort out the next MOT and a service for my car, which I will do tomorrow. You have to pay for a reprint/reissue of an MOT certificate but it's only £10 according to the Government website. And tomorrow I will also have a Post Office queue to stand in, but the Post Office is near to a card shop which sells Thorntons Chocolates, so some lovely Halloween chocolate goodies for Friday afternoon I think :)

I have a meme! From [ profile] bmax67

1. Open your unsorted images folder, or if you don't have one, any other images folder.
2. I will give you a letter.
3. Find the first three images that begin with that letter, and post them, whatever they are. Give the name they're saved under.

My letter is L, and I went through my photograph archives to find appropriate pics.

Last week I marked ten years with my current employers. A few years back, they started this thing of commemorating ten years of service with flowers. After I didn't receive mine last week, I thought the practice had been credit-crunched. I was a bit annoyed at first, but I'd taken in big cookies for the team, which were nice, and everyone was saying Well Done on 10 years & so on, so I wasn't too bothered about the absence of flowers then.

And then just after lunch, I had a phonecall from reception to collect something....

Flowers! )

As you can see flower arranging isn't my strong point, but they're very pretty and they smell very nice.

Today I met real NASA Astronauts! Crewmembers from STS-124, which you may remember me obsessing over when it was in progress.

Four posts in a day - I think that's a record :)

Instead of the pic of me at Race For Life, here's something nice to look at - a photo of my beloved teddybear:

Just saw a huge (5cm minimum wingspan) moth in the bathroom:

With that wingspan it can flutter pretty menacingly, but it's an absolute beauty, don't you think?

Random Stuff

It's gone really cold tonight. Yesterday we didn't get any of the mad rain, but some friends who live in South Warwickshire faced a long diverted drive home.

This picture was taken in Coventry, but I don't recognise it - it looks like it could be near the city centre, going by the car park and the churchy-type building in the background.

I'm watching a videotape of 8 hours worth of various QI eps I've taped since last winter, but I think one ep is duplicated :(

I've downloaded loads more 8bf plugins, and also a copy of VCW VicMan's Photo Editor, which I used to have on the old PC about four years ago. So lots of playing around with graphics filters, have about 400 interpretations of some rustic roses so far, and lots more to come.

It stopped raining enough for me to take some photos of the garden this afternoon. Took about 50 in 15 minutes.

My current lipsalve (Gator Gubba SPF15 Pineapple-Vanilla flavour) appears to have lasted forever, as I don't need to use it very often. Which would be fine if it was a nicer flavour.

Out of all the Emmy Nominations that House has garnered, the one I think most likely to win is David Morse for Outstanding Guest Appearance. But I REALLY REALLY REALLY hope Hugh wins too!!!
